Catalan universities and research and technology centres have agreed to create a training cluster in micro and nanoelectronics, as well as in other scientific and technological disciplines in response to the needs of the semiconductor industry. The cluster will offer training cycles, continuous and retraining courses, postgraduate studies and a joint master's degree with the several member entities. Moreover, it will coordinate industrial doctorates. The initiative is part of the decision to support Catalonia as the base for the semiconductor and microchip industry.
Universities and research and technology centres take part, together with the commerce chambers of Barcelona and Girona, in the promotion of Catalonia as the headquarters of one of the factories of semiconductors to be built in the European Union, where the industry of microchips is a decisive sector with a great potential. In fact, one of the strategical projects for the economic recovery and transformation (PERTE) promoted by the Spanish Government will in the field of microchips and semiconductors and will receive a public investment of more than 11 million euros from the EU Next Generation Funds.
Among the participants in the agreement on the creation of this cluster are the University of Barcelona, the Autonomous University of Barcelona, the Technical University of Catalonia, the University of Girona, the Rovira i Virgili University, the CSIC Institute of Microelectronics of Barcelona and the Technology Centre of Catalonia (Eurecat).
