More than 200 people attended the annual Cancer Council WA Research Awards held at The Westin Perth on 26 November to celebrate cancer researchers and supporters who strive to achieve a cancer free future.

Our CEO Ashley Reid honoured the award recipients, who included Dr Vinicius Cavalheri de Oliveria and Dr Rachael Zemek, both of whom were recipients of the 2020 WA Early Career Cancer Researcher of the Year Award.

Internationally recognised Professor George Yeoh was honoured for his long-standing commitment and invaluable service to cancer research.

“It is so encouraging to see passionate cancer researchers striving to ensure the best possible outcomes for local cancer patients and making such an important contribution to the global effort towards a cancer free future,” Mr Reid said.

“More than $2 million was allocated to support our cancer research funding program in 2019-2020, with 99 researchers across 40 projects receiving funding, but like many cancer charities around the world, we have seen reductions in donations for cancer research, so now, more than ever, it is imperative the WA community continues to support our work.

“It is only through the generosity of the WA community that many local cancer researchers are on the cusp of breakthroughs that have the potential to dramatically improve the way we prevent, detect and treat cancer.

“We gratefully acknowledge the generosity of the WA community including our event sponsor, Kott Gunning Lawyers. This support has enabled us to make this substantial investment into world-class local research, and we urge Western Australians to continue to support us during these challenging times.”

Help us keep up the good work Why?
Well, unlike many news organisations, we have no sponsors, no corporate or ideological interests. We don't put up a paywall – we believe in free access to information of public interest.
Media ownership in Australia is one of the most concentrated in the world (Learn more). Since the trend of consolidation is and has historically been upward, fewer and fewer individuals or organizations control increasing shares of the mass media in our country. According to independent assessment, about 98% of the media sector is held by three conglomerates. This tendency is not only totally unacceptable, but also to a degree frightening). Learn more here
We endeavour to provide the community with real-time access to true unfiltered news firsthand from primary sources. It is a bumpy road with all sorties of difficulties.
We can only achieve this goal together. Our website is open to any citizen journalists and organizations who want to contribute, publish high-quality insights or send media releases to improve public access to impartial information. You and we have the right to know, learn, read, hear what and how we deem appropriate.
Your support is greatly appreciated.
