Off-duty nurse assaulted, man charged at Newtown

A nurse has had her arm broken in three places after allegedly being assaulted when she came to the aid of a man lying unconscious on a footpath at Newtown yesterday.

About 2.50pm (Tuesday 16 June 2020), officers from Inner West Police Area Command were called to King Street, Newtown, responding to reports of a woman was being assaulted by a man.

The 65-year-old woman – who is a registered nurse – was walking along King Street when she stopped to help a 24-year-old man lying unconscious on the footpath.

Another man approached her and allegedly pushed her to the ground, before jumping on top of her and further assaulting her.

Members of the public have intervened and pushed the man off her, then called police and NSW Ambulance paramedics.

A 57-year-old man was arrested at the scene and taken to Newtown Police Station where he has been charged with assault occasioning grievous bodily harm.

He's been refused bail to appear at Central Local Court later today (Wednesday 17 June 2020).

The woman was taken to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and admitted for treatment for three fractures to her right arm and bruising.
