New Head of Munich Regional Representation Appointed by EU Commission

Today, Wolfgang Bücherl has been appointed as new Head of the European Commission Regional Representation in Munich, Germany. The Regional Office in Munich is part of the Commission´s Representation in Germany under the lead of the Head of Representation in Berlin. The date of effect of his appointment will be determined later.

Over the course of the last 25 years, Wolfgang Bücherl, a German national, has garnered extensive experience in engaging with stakeholders, governments, and parliaments, both at the European and the national level. He has consistently demonstrated a capacity to connect effectively with citizens, engage in articulate public speaking, and successfully advocate for Commission policies, showcasing also exceptional skills in political communication. He also has 15 years of experience in leading teams in various Commission departments and in national public administration.

Mr. Bücherl is currently seconded to the Bavarian Ministry for Health, Care and Prevention as an EU expert from the Commission. In this capacity, he has lead coordination efforts involving stakeholders, the Länder, the German Federal Government, and the Commission on national, regional and EU health policy matters. From 2016 to 2021, he served as the coordinator for 'Health in the European Semester' in the Commission's department for Health and Food Safety (DG SANTE), acting as the country-desk officer for reporting on Germany and France. In the earlier phases of his career, Mr. Bücherl worked for several years at the Directorate-General for Employment (DG EMPL) as a speechwriter and on inter-institutional matters, involving a considerable amount of coordination with the Council and respective Presidencies.

Background

The Commission maintains Representations in all capitals of EU Member States, and Regional Offices in Barcelona, Bonn, Marseille, Milan, Munich and Wroclaw. The Representations are the Commission's eyes, ears and voice on the ground in EU Member States. They interact with national authorities, stakeholders and citizens, and inform the media and the public about EU policies. Heads of Representations are appointed by the President of the European Commission and are her political representatives in the Member State to which they are posted.
