Hamburg in Germany hosts one of EMBL's six sites. The city is notorious for its windy and rainy weather. Lots of rain also means a high chance of beautiful rainbows, like this one captured by Juliane Wunderlich, a postdoc in the Löw group.
EMBL Hamburg is located on the campus of the Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron (DESY), with synchrotron radiation and laser facilities available - an advert for the latter can be seen right under the rainbow. In addition, a powerful X-ray free-electron laser is under construction at a nearby partner institute.
Activities at EMBL Hamburg focus on structural biology methods. The site operates three state-of-the-art beamlines for macromolecular X-ray crystallography and small-angle X-ray scattering of biological samples, complemented by facilities for sample preparation and characterisation, and data evaluation. EMBL Hamburg combines cutting-edge technology with an ambitious research programme for structures of multifunctional proteins and protein complexes of biomedical relevance.
