Construction has begun on the $32 million expansion of Glenunga International High School, as the Marshall Government's $1.3 billion education build continues to deliver a much needed jobs boost.
The upgrade, which is expected to create 78 new jobs per year, will expand the school's capacity to 2200 students by the 2022 school year, making it the largest government school in South Australia.
There are now 64 schools under construction across the state, with the value of projects underway totalling more than $1 billion.
Glenunga International High School's upgrade includes the construction of a new three storey science and technology building featuring specialist spaces and learning areas, a new double court gymnasium with two storey annexe, creation of a common plaza and landscaping.
Education Minister John Gardner said it was fantastic to see construction underway.
"With shovels in the ground on 64 school building projects across the state, the Marshall Government's $1.3 billion education build is meeting a range of critical needs across our education system while providing a massive jobs boost for South Australia," said Minister Gardner.
"With more than 100 school building projects set to be delivered in the coming years, we are providing a solid pipeline of construction jobs into the future, at a time when our state needs it the most.
"Many families across the state will be eagerly watching progress on the upgrades at their local school over the coming months, as part of a generational upgrade of school facilities.
"This upgrade will provide sufficient capacity at Glenunga International High School to accommodate up to 2200 students, catering for enrolment growth and to ensure the smooth transition of Year 7 into high school."
South Australian General Manager for Lendlease Building, Chris Leopold, was proud to play a part in the Government's education build.
"As we emerge from the global pandemic, education will be one of the most powerful investments in our future," said Mr Leopold.
"Glenunga International High School – one of three schools being delivered by Lendlease in partnership with the State Government – forms part of the State's largest ever investment in education, and we are thrilled to be playing a role."
