What is SHR Recommendation 25?

Implement contemporary workforce roles and scope of practice where there is a proven record of supporting better health outcomes and sustainability.

Contemporary workforce roles

The SHR recommends the implementation of contemporary approaches to workforce roles including different and interdisciplinary models addressing complex care and areas of reduced access, particularly where there is a proven record of supporting better health outcomes and sustainability.

Scope of practice

‘Scope of practice’ can be referred to in two ways:

  • a profession’s scope of practice
  • an individual’s scope of practice.

The scope of practice of a profession is the full spectrum of roles, functions, responsibilities, activities and decision-making capacities which individuals who make up the profession are educated, competent and authorised as part of that profession to perform.

The scope of practice of an individual is that which the individual is educated, authorised and competent to perform, whether an individual is a registered health practitioner or not.

The Chief Medical Officer Dr. Michael Levitt, in collaboration with the Chief Nursing and Midwifery Officer, the Chief Allied Health Officer, the Chief Dental Officer and the Chief Medical Officer, Mental Health, is leading the implementation of the Sustainable Health Review’s (SHR) Recommendation 25.
